The Indian filmmaker, who is cited in the media as one of the most commercially successful actors of Hindi cinema, was declared guilty of

culpable homicide yesterday and sentenced to five years in prison, almost 13 years after he killed a man sleeping on a sidewalk in Mumbai and injured four others by running them over with his SUV.

Khan was also charged with negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. The actor had said previously that it was his driver that was driving the car on the day of the accident. However, the judge told the dejected actor, “You were driving the car.”
The news channel NDTV reported that the judge rejected the actor’s repeated denials over the past decade that he was behind the wheel. The Bollywood star listened to the verdict with tears in his eyes, while local media reported that members of his family present in the courtroom broke down in tears.
The handsome 49-year-old actor will become the second popular Bollywood actor to be imprisoned in the past two years, following Sanjay Dutt, star of a series of gangster movies, who was jailed for possession of weapons linked to several bombings in Mumbai in 1993
